From the Dome: Hyveth Williams

“They were all amazed and were glorifying God, saying, ‘We have never seen anything like this’” (Mark 2:12, NASB).*

It is a great family reunion. The moment one steps into the Exhibition Hall of the Georgia World Congress Center, there are people everywhere. Attendees hail from around the globe, adorned in amazing colors draped over frames that glow like the best advertisement for our health message. The exhibits are fabulous. Someone described them as “eye candies.”

Adventist media, universities, missions, and missionaries display their accomplishments in communicating the gospel in a twenty-first-century emerging culture. Activities for children are housed in other locations to give parents temporary respite from running after charges in such a large location. Adults fill the atmosphere with laughter.

Days begin with inspirational devotions by a diverse representation of pastors and leaders. The huge dome adjoining the Congress Center beckons delegates to spend hours hammering out the business of the church by day. They deliberate and debate Church Manual items as well as approving appointments of officers, such as a new General Conference president and his team of workers who are charged with the responsibility of taking our church to a higher level of spirituality and success in the name of the Lord. Evenings are filled with energetic division reports and powerful preaching of the Word, but it’s the fellowship of believers that has left a lasting impression on my heart.

My eyes widened with appreciation and awe at how talented, culturally diverse, and multifaceted is our church that otherwise seems so small from a local perspective. There’s a wonder and joy in making first acquaintances and seeing high-ranking leaders walking through the halls without bodyguards as they mingle with members without regard to professional distinctions. There are numberless instances when a song or a word, a greeting with a hug, touches the heart and transforms the mind, engendering feelings of gratitude that our church accepted the divine mantle of practicing as well as proclaiming God’s grace. Great light and joy flows from this gathering. I have only one regret: we didn’t fling the doors open to our nation, invite friends from other faiths and our CNN neighbors next-door to show the world what great things God has done for and through our Adventist family.
